The iPhone 11 has shipped, and so begins the iPhone 12 rumors mill! With the release of the iPhone 12 in 2020 Apple will begin the start of their next iPhone tick tick tock schedule, with 2021 and 2022 as iPhone refreshes.

Previously we would get a new model design followed by a refresh, but Apple then moved to a new 3 year plan for the iPhone and in 2020 we should expect a major redesign.

iPhone 12 Design

The iPhone 11 featured a major upgrade to a triple lens camera and improved battery life. We can expect a lot more in 2020.

iPhone 12 Screen Display

According to MacRumors we will be getting 3 models like this year but with different size dimensions. The 5.8” iPhone 12 Pro will change to a 5.4” OLED screen size.

Accompanying it will be the cheaper standard iPhone 12 which will retain its predecessor’s screen size at 6.1” OLED. There will be no LCD panels in the next iPhone iteration range.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will grow to a whopping 6.7” for those with deep pockets both metaphorically and physically.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said the iPhone 12 will feature ‘a new metal frame, a more complex segmentation design, new trenching and injection molding procedures, and sapphire or glass cover assembly for protection’.

Refresh Rate

Similar to the current iPad Pros, Apple will be updating the iPhone 12 screen to an improved variable refresh rate reaching up to 120hz. So expect buttery smooth transitions and swiping.

Whether it will also incorporate an ‘always on’ display much like the new 5th gen Apple watch remains to be seen. A variable refresh rate going down to 1hz would allow for helpful data to remain on screen, like the time or notifications etc.

Notch

Ming Chi Kuo has reported that Apple should be removing the notch from the iPhone 12 range, having a thin bezel design.

According to Ben Geskin the iPhone 12 screen will use Face ID and a TrueDepth camera housed in the top bezel (not under the screen).

Camera

The 2019 iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max debuted an all new triple lens camera system, which comprises of a 12 megapixel telephoto, wide-angle and ultra wide-angle lens combo.

The 2020 iPhone will at the very least have this lens system but improved. What we could see is a quad-lens camera much like the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

The 4th lens on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is a ToF sensor (Time of Flight). This lens measures distance by measuring the time it takes light to reflect/bounce off surfaces in front of lens.

This essentially creates a depth match preview which can be used in AR (Augmented Reality).

For photography this could assist in using the depth maps for creating improved shallow depths of field shots, which is currently achieved by Huawei and Samsung without the need for ToF.

The most likely use will be for augmented reality purposes.

Like the iPhone 11, the standard iPhone 12 will more than likely not share the same camera improvements as the Pro models. More likely it will come with the camera system from the current iPhone 11 Pro models, while the iPhone Pro models will include the improved cameras.

iPhone 12 5G

According to the same report from Ming Chi Kuo, 5G will be coming to the iPhone 12 Pro models, but not the standard iPhone 12.

The iPhone 12 Pros will come with a 5G Qualcomm modems. Apple have bought Intel’s modem division but it may be still too early to incorporate their own Apple proprietary modems.

Under Screen TouchID

In August 2019 a report from Ming Chi Kuo said that Apple are working towards having dual biometric technologies, FaceID and TouchID on the iPhone.

However he believes this will be no earlier than 2021.

But with 2020 being a year for a major overhaul we could see this in the update. Apple has received a patent for an under screen fingerprint sensor, which would allow a user to use their fingerprint anywhere on the screen to unlock.

Challenges to getting this tech in the 2020 model include overcoming power consumption issues, sensor are size and thickness, as well as the lamination process.
