The Sony A1 is an absolute beast of a camera which covers high res stills, fast shooting photography and even recording 8K RAW video. For a camera like this you’ll need the best memory cards for the Sony A1 available on the market.

Now if you are in a rush, below I’ve recommended the two best memory cards below (CF Express Type A and SD Card) for the Sony A1 that will cover most needs.

You can match these two cards to most needs and requirements, but read on after, and you can tailor your needs to match the right card. Maybe you don’t need to spend as much on a CFExpress Type A card.

Or maybe you need more but have a smaller budget. Is there a card that matches those needs?

These cards will be more than adequate to cover the needs of most video content creators.

But as I’ve stated before, if you’re using this camera for photography only, and not video, then the best memory cards for the Sony A1 won’t be the same as Sony A1 video creators, and vice versa.

Or maybe you are video only, in which case you’ll probably need a bigger card that writes data fast.

Whichever use case is your scenario, we need to go into more detail and understand what the different cards are capable of. This way we can then match the right card to the right Sony A1 user.

Don’t be that person who buys a card that’s far too big for your needs. You could save that money and purchase essential gear like lighting or audio equipment.

Later on I’ll break down further every detail on the face of a SD card and CFExpress Type A card so you can work out for yourself if the card you’re holding is right.

Which Memory Cards Does the Sony A1 Use?

The Sony A1 is one of the newer Alpha series cameras that employ the ingenious function of having dual memory card slots that support both CFExpress Type A and SD cards.

And because the Sony A1 supports both UHS-I and UHS-II cards, you’ll more than likely have some older cards that will work. so there’s even more choice when it comes to the best memory cards for the Sony A1.

But I do stress, in order to record the higher quality video modes like 8K RAW you will need to have a fast card.

How Much Video Can the Sony A1 Record?

The Sony A1 continues Sony’s video dominance with all the video resolutions, frame rates and codecs of the impressive Sony A7SIII, but adding the even more impressive 8K RAW (30fps XAVC HS 10-bit 4:2:0) internal recording ability.

The A1 can also shoot at Super 35 cropped, oversampling from 5.8K to produce a high quality 4K image.

Below are all the modes available with approximate recording times. These times would change depending on environment factors etc.

Finally

There’s a lot of information in this article and I’ve tried to cover all the bases so that you can purchase a card that fits your shooting/recording needs to a tee.

No creator should make the mistake of using the wrong card for their needs, spending more funds than should be needed. Or conversely, buying too little for your needs and having to work around bottlenecks.

Get it right the first time!

You’ll also need either an CFExpress Type A card reader, SD card reader or both maybe? These ones below will work great.
