The best memory card for the Nikon Z fc will not necessarily be the same for a videographer, photographer or even a hybrid shooter.

Even with hybrid shooters not all users are equal, some will shoot more video than stills and vice versa.

So whichever scenario best fits your needs we will have to go into more detail to work out which of the recommended cards will suit you the best.

Which Memory Cards Does the Nikon Z fc use?

Unlike the more advanced Z9 and Z7 cameras, the Nikon Z fc will only support one SD memory card slot that will only support the older UHS-I SD card format.

This means you will not want to use the much faster UHS-II cards, which will save you money. I usually recommend UHS-II for recording 4K video, but Nikon are able to produce 4K on older memory card formats.

We’ll see later on why, as the bit rates for the Nikon Z fc are quite small compared to Canon or Sony equivalents.

Best Memory Cards for the Nikon Z fc to Record 4K Video

The Nikon Z fc can record 3840 x 2160 4K UHD at 30p (progressive), 25p, and 24p. The file formats available are .MOV and .MP4 using H.264/MPEG-4 codecs.

Do keep in mind, that these numbers are approximations for ideal conditions.

Lots of other factors also contribute to the recording capacities. For example battery health and life, and environmental factors etc.

Nikon video is also limited to a max of 30 minutes record time so you will have to press record again for longer video. Nikon is also using the old EXPEED chip black box setting that can only create up to eight 4GB (approx.) files for video.

The Other Best Memory Cards for the Nikon Z fc

While Sandisk is one of my favourite brands of SD cards and have yet to fail me in my over 10 years as a professional photographer, there are alternative brands which offer just as good cards.

Sony for example with their Tough series are cards that should last years.

Finally

No one should get the wrong memory card, either by spending more than required on too large a capacity SD card, or conversely, getting a card too small for your needs.

Too small cards means having to make workarounds for the bottlenecks you will have, and too large SD cards mean extra money spent that could be spent on other essential gear.

Get the right card the first time.

Once you have decided on the best card for your requirements you will then need an SD card reader to get your data off quickly and efficiently:

Anker 2-in-1 USB 3.0 SD Card Reader for SDXC, SDHC, SD, MMC, RS-MMC, Micro SDXC, Micro SD, Micro SDHC Card and UHS-I Cards
  • Simultaneously read and write on two cards to save yourself the effort of constant unplugging and re-plugging.
  • USB 3.0 enables data transfer rates of up to 5Gbps for faster Sync times, backward compatible with USB 2.0/ 1.1.
