Now I have my Canon R6 I’ve been juggling and sorting out the best gear to use with it, and I’ve finally settled (for now) on what I think are the best accessories for the Canon EOS R6.
Before you read on, this article is aimed at content creators, not strictly photography only or video only users. But someone who is creating a business around their creative passion and will be using the R6 for photo and video.
So let’s start!

Wireless Remote Control
I’ve had various remote controls over the years and I’ve always had a situation where I needed it. The alternative before was to use either a wired remote trigger or use the time delay.
But for film or for precision timing having a remote control is imperative if you need to be in a different location to the camera or you have to place the camera in an awkward position where you can’t be behind the camera.
The great thing about Canon’s BR-E1 is it also has film options on the side of the camera which makes working with the R6 even more convenient.
- A wireless remote controller compatible with Bluetooth enabled cameras for wireless focusing, still shooting and video recording
- Zoom capability using the Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1

L-Shaped Bracket
An L shaped bracket is one of the best accessories for the Canon EOS R6 for convenience on this list, especially if you use portrait mode and landscape mode interchangeably.
With Instagram and TikTok favoring the vertical aspect ratios, changing to that set up quickly is important. You can miss a shot using the tripod ball head to get a vertical shot that is perfectly aligned.
With an L shaped bracket you can it in a second. You just change the camera on the tripod to its side.
The 3 Legged Thing L shaped bracket can also be used as a normal tripod head plate by removing the side, and it’s compatible with most tripods.

EF to RF Mount Adapter
Canon are still fleshing out their lense line up. There are many missing focal lengths that are important to content creators.
Fortunately with the EF to RF mount adapter you have access to the entire EF lens line up, which is extensive. Canon have invested in three different versions for some great capabilities.
- Standard mount adapter allows EF/EF-S Lens compatibility with the EOS R camera system, including the EOS R, EOS RP, EOS R5, and EOS R6
- Built-in control ring provides quick access to camera functions

This adapter has the control ring for extra functionality. You can assign to various functions like ISO or aperture etc.
If you can ignore the semi obsolete nature of the EF lenses there are some great lenses which are only fractionally inferior to the RF equivalent.
For instance the RF 24-70mm L is optically superior to my EF version, but you need to pixel peep to see the difference in quality. The RF version has IS, but with the R6’s IBIS I have recorded acceptable stabilized footage with my EF 24-70mm.
I can’t see how it would make sense financially to trade in my EF lens to get the RF equivalent when it’s not a huge difference in quality and practicality.
One massive advantage to using the EF lens with an adapter are the adapter options. One is a standard one (which I have), and another has a control ring.
The best adapter is the one with drop in filters. This eliminates the need for fiddling around with step up rings or screw in filters. I really would like this option with RF lenses.

I already have my Lee filters set and system so I couldn’t justify spending an extra $450 for the drop in filter adapter.
SD Cards (and Card Reader)
The R6 uses UHS-II SD cards, and you can find the best SD card for the Canon R6 in my article.
And you’ll need to get your photos and video off the camera onto your computer.
- Simultaneously read and write on two cards to save yourself the effort of constant unplugging and re-plugging.
- USB 3.0 enables data transfer rates of up to 5Gbps for faster Sync times, backward compatible with USB 2.0/ 1.1.

Tripod
Every content creator should get a tripod; locked off shots will always get the sharpest photos and video.
But it can get expensive fast. With tripods I recommend saving up to get a decent one rather than a cheap low quality tripod and spend again later for a better one.

If you have more of a budget then you can get a tripod from my favorite brand, Peak Design. There are two versions, the aluminium version and the carbon fibre version, which is definitely one of the best on the market.

Like your mobile phone, protecting your rear LCD screen is important especially as a variable articulated LCD screen it is more prone to damage.

Batteries
The Canon R6 uses the LP-E6NH which has a capacity of 2130 mHa, which is 14% more than its predecessor, the LP-E6N.
This battery is also backwards compatible meaning I can still use it in my Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

You should always travel with at least two batteries in my experience.
External Microphone
I would never recommend using the in camera microphone for audio. One, because you need the mic to be as close to the person as possible; and two, the quality is never as good as external mic.

I have always used Rode video mics and see no reason to not keep recommending them. You can get this one below which is cheap but still great quality:

External Monitor
Not an essential accessory for the Canon EOS R6, but certainly a useful one. I use my Feelworld F6 Plus monitor for when I film video and the camera is at a distance from me.
But the better option is to get the Atmos Ninja V monitor which will record externally in easier to use video codecs. An added benefit is that you can film with Atmos Ninja V for extended periods without any overheating issues (although I have not experienced any with the 1.4 firmware update).

Gimbal
This is another non essential but great accessory for the Canon EOS R6. I personally have the DJI Ronin S which now has a V2 edition.
I feel that with IBIS and lens IS the Canon R6 delivers a very stablized image on its own. But for more challenging scenarios a dedicated gimbal will help.
